Bishop Hill
Bishop Hill is a village of roughly 113 people in Henry County, founded in 1846 by Swedish immigrants. Its live-music activity is anchored by one dedicated venue. Bishop Hill Creative Commons is an intimate, all-ages music venue and artist cooperative owned and operated by the nonprofit Crossroads Cultural Connections. It was formed in 2018. The venue books across a wide range of styles, including blues, bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, jazz, country, rock, and classical. Past performers have included Jess Klein, Jenny Reynolds, and Sofia Talvik. Shows are family-friendly and typically begin with a community potluck where audiences share a meal with visiting artists. The venue was selected as a recipient of Live Music Society's 2026 Music in Action Grant, one of 29 independent venues chosen across 19 states. With that support, Crossroads Cultural Connections is launching the Prairie Sound Residency, bringing established artists to Bishop Hill for public performances, youth outreach, and mentorship for emerging musicians. Beyond the Creative Commons, the village hosts the annual Doodle Folk Music Festival each June in the village park, featuring Illinois folk musicians such as Lee Murdoch and the Bucktown Americana Music Show. The festival is free and funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council.
