Porter

A city in the Chicago area

The Speakeasy at the Spa has a genuinely unusual past: it was originally a 1920s speakeasy said to have been frequented by Al Capone, where secret passcodes were used to enter and alcohol was reportedly smuggled via the Little Calumet River into the basement. Today the room retains tin ceilings, a 90-year-old horseshoe bar from a Chicago saloon, and a vintage Seaburg jukebox. As a live-music spot, it operates on an intimate scale. Weekend evenings feature live music by Alexis on piano, and the venue offers a complimentary small buffet. It functions as a 21-plus lounge and dinner-show room, described as an up-front and personal performance space, with acts mixing original material and cover songs. Acts like Jim St. James and Keytar Jeff have appeared here, at 333 N. Mineral Springs Rd. Porter's live-music options beyond this one room are limited, making the Speakeasy the town's primary after-dark music destination.
