Lawrence

Lawrence, home to the University of Kansas, punches well above its size as a live-music city. Nirvana and Green Day played here in a small standing-room-only shack, Janelle Monáe packed in her hometown crowd, and George Clinton and Public Enemy drew large outdoor crowds. That legacy runs through the city's 24 active music venues today. The two downtown anchors on Massachusetts Street sit at different scales. The Granada, built in 1928 as a vaudeville theater, holds around 900 and has drawn national touring acts including The Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, and Weezer since converting to a concert venue in 1993. In 2005 The Get Up Kids recorded a live album there. A few blocks away, The Bottleneck has been an independently owned staple for live music in downtown Lawrence since 1985. It is considered by many a rock-and-roll historical landmark. It books live music up to seven nights a week. Liberty Hall has served as a Lawrence staple for over 100 years, making it the oldest venue in the city. The Lied Center of Kansas on the KU campus brings in classical and world-music performers. Brewery taprooms, including Free State Brewing Company, 23rd Street Brewery, and Lawrence Beer Company, add regular local and regional bookings across the week.
