Fort Atkinson
Cafe Carpe sits in a century-old brick building on the Rock River, with a separate listening room and a screened porch overlooking the water. Run by Bill Camplin and Kitty Welch, the Carpe has been operating since 1985. The listening room holds up to 50 people, and it has been known statewide and beyond for decades as a destination for audiences and performers, with the programming often leaning toward folk and singer-songwriter but ranging beyond. Past performers include Peter Mulvey, Willy Porter, and Randy Sabien. The room's reputation reached the point that Redbird, the folk trio of Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst, and Peter Mulvey, recorded a live album there in December 2008. Owner and musician Bill Camplin introduces the acts and performs himself. For a city Fort Atkinson's size, the Carpe gives the area a live-music anchor well out of proportion to its small capacity.
