Washington Park's live-music identity centers on a single historic structure: the Washington Park Bandshell, formally called the Blatz Temple of Music, funded by beer baron Emil Blatz and opened to a crowd of more than 40,000 in 1938. The bandshell seats 8,500. Its "Music Under the Stars" program ran for 55 years and drew performers including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Today the stage is kept active by Washington Park Wednesdays. The series runs Wednesdays, July 8 through August 26, and since 2019 its eight-week lineup has brought together musicians, food trucks, community groups, and more to engage the diverse neighborhoods surrounding the park. Each week carries a theme, with musical artists, activities, and vendors chosen to match. The 2026 lineup moves through jazz and blues (Troubadours of Rhythm), Latin rhythms (Orquestra Rumba), funk (Stephen Hull Experience), and swing (The Hot Swing Trio). Washington Park Wednesdays is the only free concert series in Milwaukee to offer ASL interpretation at every performance. Admission is free throughout.
