Originally playing nu metal, the band eventually changed their name to Big Blue Monkey in 1998, and then subsequently changed it again to Story of the Year in 2002, after the release of their self-titled EP on the indie label Criterion Records. At the time, they claimed they had discovered that a blues group named Big Blue Monkey already existed. The duo formed the band in 2016 after the demise of a common prior band, and released a series of EPs leading up to their debut studio album, Somewhere City in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic limited the ability to tour in support of the album, so they instead focused on recording material written during the prior sessions to release their second studio album, Gami Gang in 2021, and wrote and recorded further material for a series of smaller releases, including a mixtape, The Brightest Days, released in 2023. Turning to music for comfort, songwriting quickly became the only way to make sense of the world happening around her. Characterized by a seasoned, innate darkness and drawing from subgenres like grunge and metal, Ally soon found hope and direction in pursuing her artistry. After dropping out of college her freshman year she found a home at a Manhattan-based studio, Engine Room Audio. From there she worked toward her goal of becoming a recording artist.
