Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) is a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1971. The group originated as Brave Belt and was founded by brothers Randy Bachman, Robbie Bachman, and Tim Bachman, together with Fred Turner. The band achieved its greatest commercial success during the 1970s, releasing a series of successful albums and singles in Canada and the United States. Their best-known songs include "Let It Ride", "Takin' Care of Business", "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Hey You", and "Roll on Down the Highway". The band's recordings have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. The original line-up consisted of Randy Bachman (lead guitar, lead vocals), Fred Turner (bass guitar, lead vocals), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals), and Robbie Bachman (drums, percussion, backing vocals). This line-up released two albums in 1973. Following Tim Bachman's departure, Blair Thornton joined as lead guitarist. The revised line-up released four studio albums between 1974 and 1977 and achieved the band's greatest commercial success, including two albums that reached the top five of the US album charts and the number-one US single "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet". After a hiatus that began in 2005, Randy Bachman and Fred Turner reunited in 2009 to record and tour together. They performed at the halftime show of the 2010 Grey Cup in Edmonton and continued collaborating until Turner's retirement from touring in 2018. On 29 March 2014, the classic "Not Fragile" line-up reunited for the first time since 1991 during Bachman-Turner Overdrive's induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and performed "Takin' Care of Business". Robbie Bachman died on 12 January 2023 at the age of 69, and Tim Bachman died on 28 April 2023 at the age of 71. In June 2023, Randy Bachman announced the return of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The touring line-up included his son Tal Bachman and members of his backing band, while Fred Turner was scheduled to appear at selected performances. While "Brave Belt II" also failed to achieve major chart success, Turner's songwriting and vocal contributions helped move the band's sound towards a harder rock style. Following the end of their contract with Reprise Records, the group financed new recordings independently. In 1973 they signed with Mercury Records after label executive Charlie Fach agreed to release their material. Around this time the band adopted the name Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The name was inspired by a trucking magazine titled "Overdrive", with the surnames Bachman and Turner added to emphasise the identities of the group's principal members. The band's self-titled debut album, "Bachman-Turner Overdrive", was released in 1973. Although it did not initially produce a major hit single, extensive touring and radio exposure helped establish the group, particularly in parts of the United States. The album was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Their breakthrough came with "Bachman-Turner Overdrive II" (1973), which reached the top ten in both Canada and the United States. The album included the singles "Let It Ride" and "Takin' Care of Business", the latter becoming one of the band's signature songs. Tim Bachman left the group in early 1974 and was replaced by Blair Thornton. The first album recorded by this line-up, "Not Fragile" (1974), became the band's most commercially successful studio release. "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" became the band's only number-one single in the United States. (So Far)" became one of the group's most successful releases. Their next studio album, "Freeways" (1977), represented a stylistic shift and achieved more modest commercial results. Shortly after its release, Randy Bachman left the band. To fulfil contractual obligations, the remaining members continued under the abbreviated name BTO. Jim Clench joined the group, with Fred Turner switching to rhythm guitar. This line-up released "Street Action" (1978) and "Rock n' Roll Nights" (1979). Although these albums produced limited commercial success, the single "Heartaches" reached the charts in both Canada and the United States. BTO disbanded in 1980. During the following years, former members pursued various projects. Randy Bachman formed Ironhorse and later Union, while Fred Turner participated in several of these ventures. During this period, legal disputes arose concerning ownership of the Bachman-Turner Overdrive and BTO names and trademarks. In 2013, a retrospective collection titled "Bachman-Turner Overdrive: 40th Anniversary" was released, featuring previously unreleased recordings and archival material. Fred Turner announced his retirement from touring in 2018. In 2023, Randy Bachman reactivated Bachman-Turner Overdrive with a new touring line-up that included Tal Bachman, Mick Dalla-Vee, Marc LaFrance, and Brent Howard Knudsen. The group resumed touring in celebration of the band's 50th anniversary, with Fred Turner participating on selected occasions.
