La Porte

La Porte's live-music calendar centers on two venues that serve different ends of the spectrum. The Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater, dedicated in 1976 and named for a former mayor, sits in Fox Park and runs a full warm-weather program. It hosts the Arts in the Park Summer Concert Series from June through August on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, featuring performances by the La Porte City Band as well as acts from across the nation. The La Porte City Band, founded in 1879, is the oldest continuously operating municipal band in the United States. The amphitheater also anchors LakeFest, the city's annual lakeside festival, where recent Saturday-night headliners have included alt-rock band Everclear and, the following year, Soul Asylum, playing a free show at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater in Fox Park. The concerts are free to the public and open to all ages. Indoors, the La Porte Civic Auditorium, opened in 1930 with 7,600 square feet of space, hosts concerts, athletic contests, weddings, and stage plays. Past performers include Marian Anderson, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Ace Frehley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cheap Trick, and Night Ranger. Today the auditorium books a mix of tribute acts and classical programming, including La Porte County Symphony Orchestra concerts at the auditorium each season.
