Lake Forest

A suburb in the Chicago area

Gorton Center is a nonprofit that has served Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and the surrounding region since 1974. It is the suburb's primary dedicated live-music and performing-arts address. The center houses the John & Nancy Hughes Theater, a state-of-the-art performing-arts venue, and books live music, comedy, children's programs, film festivals, and community programs. The theater seats 309 and features professional sound, light, video, and digital cinema technology. Programming ranges wide: live jazz, classical music, comedy, spoken word, dance, and theater have all appeared on its stage. Gorton also takes shows outdoors; a recent season included an outdoor concert with the option to move inside to the Hughes Theater if weather required it. The Lake Forest Civic Orchestra performs here as well, partnering with the center for community celebrations. Beyond Gorton, the Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Department runs free outdoor summer concerts in Market Square and the parks, covering rock, soul, country, and new wave.
