Newark

Newark's live-music picture is shaped by two venues at opposite ends of the scale. The Midland Theatre, built in 1928 in the Newark Downtown Historic District and used as a performance venue since reopening in 2000, seats 1,200. It books a wide range of genres, with past and upcoming acts including Christopher Cross, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Pat Metheny, and George Thorogood and The Destroyers. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has also played the Midland, bringing horn-fueled swing to the room. On the smaller end, West Church Social opened in mid-December 2023 and has quickly become the city's primary weekend bar venue for live music. Located at 1650 W. Church Street with a capacity of 300 and a 21+ door, it books acoustic, classic rock, country, pop, rock, and top 40. It runs live music every weekend and describes itself as the largest performance space in Newark. The venue also serves food and drinks, has an outdoor patio, and includes a speakeasy.
