Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor carries more live-music weight than its size suggests, driven partly by the University of Michigan but sustained by a deep bench of independent venues across every scale and genre. The Ark is North America's oldest nonprofit acoustic music club, an intimate 400-seat room presenting folk and roots performers over 300 nights a year. For over 40 years, The Ark's annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival has taken over Hill Auditorium, with past headliners including Mavis Staples and Brandi Carlile. The Blind Pig opened in 1971 as a home for blues musicians and after moving upstairs became an important stop for nationally touring punk, new wave, and alternative bands as well as local acts. In 1989, a then little-known Nirvana played a sold-out show there, and later cited the Blind Pig as their all-time favorite venue to play. Blue LLama Jazz Club is a jazz club and fine dining restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor with live jazz five nights a week. Kerrytown Concert House, set in a 19th-century home, hosts world-class jazz, classical, and folk in just 120 seats. The historic Michigan Theater brings in touring concerts and has welcomed performers including Stevie Nicks, Lana Del Rey, and Yo-Yo Ma.
