Conant Gardens
A neighborhood in Detroit
Conant Gardens is a historically Black neighborhood in northeast Detroit. The neighborhood has genuine jazz roots: the Double V Bar opened here in 1942, and Club Deliese, a jazz hall, followed in 1945. Today, the one named live-music spot carrying that tradition forward is Mandee's Jazz Cafe. Mandee's Jazz Cafe sits at 17132 Conant St. and is open Monday through Saturday, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. The spot pairs a bar menu with a full bar, with drink specials running until midnight. Live music is part of the draw, though reviewer accounts suggest the programming can lean toward Detroit rap alongside jazz. Wednesday night karaoke, hosted by a regular named Michael, draws a loyal crowd. Regulars describe it as the "Cheers of the Eastside", a neighborhood bar where the music is secondary to the room's sense of community.
