Hamtramck
Hamtramck punches well above its size as a music city. Small's, at Conant and Caniff, grew out of Hamtramck's late-1990s club scene, later added a second stage for increased capacity, and continues booking shows today. It is run by musicians, including Dave and Melody Malosh. New Dodge Lounge books local and national acts in rock, indie, alt-country, and punk. Under new ownership since 2022, it is a bi-level venue hosting live entertainment Wednesday through Sunday, including touring acts and monthly burlesque shows. Ghost Light runs open mic on Tuesdays, karaoke on Thursdays, and live shows Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Sanctuary Detroit operates as a full music-and-art center, booking rock, metal, hip-hop, alternative, and jazz on a near-nightly schedule. Trixie's Bar puts bands on the weekend stage and runs a bring-your-own-vinyl mixing-table night every Wednesday, plus open mic comedy on Tuesdays. The annual Hamtramck Blowout, which draws around 150 bands into 17 venues across the city, is closely tied to the Outer Limits Lounge, whose owner John Szymanski is one of the festival's key organizers.
