A neighborhood in Detroit
Morningside sits on Detroit's east side, in zip code 48224, west of East English Village and north of Grosse Pointe Park. It's a primarily residential neighborhood, and its live-music footprint is small: First Place Lounge on Harper Ave is the area's live music club, operating as a lounge and neighborhood bar. Thursday blues nights are the anchor, drawing regulars who rave about local musician Branden, and the open jam nights pull in some of the area's best local players. Patrons are encouraged to bring their instrument and sit in with the band. The Morningside Community Organization's own blog documented a set by Horns of Plenty at the lounge, featuring saxophonist Mike Hudson and trumpet player and singer Greg Mathis, who together have about 90 years of performing experience, with Mathis also a former member of Detroit R&B group The Floaters. Live music and DJ run throughout the week. The room is small and neighborhood-facing, the kind of spot where, as regulars put it, "everybody knows each other and if you're new you will leave there feeling like you know everybody."
