Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe sits on "The Hill" in Grosse Pointe Farms and is the city's anchor for live music. Founded in 2008, it was named Hour Detroit's Restaurant of the Year in 2010. Gretchen Carhartt Valade, known as the "angel of jazz" for her contributions to Detroit's art scene, opened the cafe at age 82. The 65-seat dining room has hosted names including Mose Allison, Stanley Jordan, Freddy Cole, Thornetta Davis, and Wendell Harrison. Wednesdays bring a solo piano player with no cover charge; Thursday through Saturday it's live jazz with a $20 cover. The room has an intimate, Old English pub atmosphere and reservations are strongly advised. The Valade family has since expanded next door with The Dog House, a 24-seat cocktail lounge at 93 Kercheval that pipes in live music from the Dirty Dog and serves small plates Wednesday through Saturday. For Grosse Pointe Farms, jazz is the live-music story, and Dirty Dog is where it's told.
