Powderhorn
Powderhorn is primarily a residential south Minneapolis neighborhood, but its arts roots run deep. It has a dense network of working artists, musicians, and writers who came for the cheap rent and stayed for the community. That DIY spirit finds its clearest live-music expression at the Birdhaus. The Birdhaus is a DIY house venue and record label in Powderhorn. It hosts the recurring FRESH CUTS series alongside other events and counts 98 bands among its alumni. Beyond the Birdhaus, music surfaces neighborhood-wide each year at Powderhorn Porchfest, a festival with a 14-year-long tradition of turning neighbors' front porches into stages, drawing acts across Hip Hop, R&B, Country, Americana, Latin Folk, Jazz Fusion, and more. Blackbird's Music Store, a locally owned instrument shop, also hosts regular adult "learner's jam" events in the neighborhood. For dedicated live-music venues, though, Powderhorn is thin, the Birdhaus is the real anchor, and it operates on house-show terms.
