North Minneapolis

North Minneapolis carries real musical weight. The Capri Theater, built in 1927, is the last remaining theater on the Northside and the stage where Prince debuted his first solo concert. Now run by PCYC, a nonprofit dedicated to arts and youth programming for North Minneapolis families, the Capri presents world-class concerts alongside film, theater, and dance, with spaces designed to help neighbors connect and collaborate. Since 2010, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra has partnered with the Capri to bring chamber music performances to the Northside, with free tickets available to Northside residents and families of students attending Northside schools. The Velvet operates as a members-only social club for adults 30 and up, offering an upscale lounge setting with music as part of the atmosphere rather than a conventional ticketed concert space. The neighborhood's live-music story is also still being written: a riverfront amphitheater is under development, to be operated by First Avenue, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the African American Community Development Corp., with a target opening of Memorial Day weekend 2027.
