Grand Crossing

A neighborhood in Chicago

Grand Crossing doesn't offer much in the way of nighttime entertainment by Chicago standards, but its two music spots are genuinely distinct from each other. On East 75th Street, the 50 Yard Line has been a community staple serving generations of customers for decades. Live blues and Chicago Steppin' dancing draw a crowd, and the place has a loyal following and an unpretentious energy. Jazz is featured on Tuesday nights, with free admission. Karaoke runs on Wednesdays. A few blocks north, The Land School occupies the former St. Laurence Elementary School at 72nd and Dorchester, a building shuttered in 2002 that faced demolition. A seven-year, $12 million project converted it into an artists hub under artist Theaster Gates and his Rebuild Foundation. The auditorium is now being programmed as a venue for house, jazz, and experimental music. Inaugural creative partners include D-Composed, a Chicago-based Black chamber music ensemble; International Anthem, the Chicago-born record label; and Duane Powell, DJ and music historian and steward of the Frankie Knuckles Collection.
