Chatham is a tight-knit, predominantly African American neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, recognized for its deep roots in jazz and blues. Commercial corridors along 79th Street, 87th Street, and Cottage Grove Avenue became anchors for Black-owned businesses, and from those corridors grew a lounge culture that is community-driven rather than nightclub-flashy. Duke's Cocktail Lounge on E. 79th Street is named after its late founder, James Slater, nicknamed Duke, and the family-owned bar has served South Side clientele since 1962. The lounge runs DJ nights Tuesday and Thursday and anchors its week with Friday house music, drawing a 35-and-older crowd. Lil's Something Kool on S. Cottage Grove Avenue has been running for over 37 years, with DJs spinning blues, jazz, R&B, and steppin' music seven nights a week. Together, the two lounges represent Chatham's corner of the South Side's long-standing, adult-oriented DJ-lounge tradition.
