Humboldt Park

A neighborhood in Chicago

Humboldt Park's dedicated live-music infrastructure is modest, but the California Clipper at 1002 N. California Ave. anchors what the neighborhood has. Established in 1937, the California Clipper is Humboldt Park's longest-standing neighborhood bar, known for its classic Chicago tavern vibe and live music. The room features red leather booths, vintage red light fixtures, and Tannoy speakers. Nearly every night of the week the calendar runs from jazz groups and country acts to DJs and beyond. A back room called the Lil Clip hosts late-night dancing on Fridays and Saturdays. Recent programming has included La Cantera, an Afro-Caribbean jazz ensemble of young adults presented by the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, alongside house, funk, soul, and experimental sets. Hospitality group Orbit Group revived the Clipper after a brief pandemic-era closure. Outside the bar, the park itself hosts the Latin Jazz Festival and the Puerto Rican Festival, reflecting the neighborhood's strong Puerto Rican cultural presence on the music calendar.
