University Park

A suburb in the Chicago area

University Park is a quiet Chicago Southland suburb about 30 miles south of the Loop, and its live-music life centers almost entirely on one institution: the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University, voted the Southland's "Best Live Entertainment Venue" for five years running. The 1,171-seat venue is designed for large-scale productions including concerts, ballet, opera, and theatrical plays. Each year it presents more than 50 performances reaching more than 60,000 people. Programming ranges across national touring acts and Chicago-based artists, covering genres from jazz to opera alongside family-oriented shows. The center is currently marking 30 years of music, dance, and theater in the Southland. For residents who want bar-level live music on a given night, options are thin locally, making the Center the clear anchor of the area's music calendar.
