Hazel Park
A city in the Detroit area
Hazel Park is a small working-class city just north of Detroit whose bar scene has long reflected its blue-collar roots. The city's identity was shaped for decades by Hazel Park Raceway, a horse track that closed in 2018, and the neighborhood pub culture that grew up around it. House of Shamrocks, on John R Rd near 9 Mile, has been the area's anchor Irish sports bar since 2002. With a capacity of 100, it puts live bands on stage on weekends, runs karaoke on Tuesdays, and keeps a DJ going on Thursday ladies' nights. Max Dugans, a dive bar and music venue on E. 10 Mile Rd, leans hard into blues. It operates a small stage for local acts, with live blues on weekend nights, and serves as a regular host for the Detroit Blues Society's monthly open jam sessions. Country music also gets a turn in rotation. Between the two spots, Hazel Park's live-music footprint is small but genuinely rooted in the neighborhood.
