Midwest

A neighborhood in Detroit

Soul on Ice is an upscale bar, lounge, and entertainment venue that opened in Detroit's Midwest neighborhood in late 2022. It sits on Livernois Avenue just north of Joy Road, in a community that straddles Livernois from Warren Avenue to the south and I-96 to the north. The venue is noted for opening further south along the corridor, in an area that hasn't seen nearly as many new businesses in recent years. The Black-owned bar and lounge was opened by Herb and Danielle Sanders, and its entertainment lineup spotlights local and touring soul, R&B, hip-hop, and techno artists. Owners also book internationally known Detroit-based DJs, including Bruce Bailey, Kelly Holmes, and Vernon English, alongside live jazz, house, old-school hip-hop, and blue-eyed soul performances. Recurring House Music Nights run every second and fourth Thursday, with no cover charge. DJ sets and comedy nights round out a weekly calendar that runs Wednesday through Saturday. The Midwest neighborhood has its own musical heritage, including a history of jazz greats at the Blue Bird Inn. The Detroit Sound Conservancy is currently rehabbing that historic Blue Bird Inn on Tireman Avenue as a music heritage space. For now, Soul on Ice carries the neighborhood's live-music flag on Livernois.
