New Center
A neighborhood in Detroit
New Center sits adjacent to Midtown, roughly three miles north of Downtown Detroit, and its live-music offerings span two very different scales. The Fisher Theatre, inside the landmark Fisher Building, is one of Detroit's oldest live-theatre venues, originally opened in 1928 as a vaudeville and movie house and remodeled as a live theatre in 1961. Since the conversion it has hosted world premieres of major Broadway productions, including *Hello Dolly*, *Sweet Charity*, and *Fiddler on the Roof*. The house seats 2,089 and today mixes Broadway touring runs with occasional concerts, drawing artists such as Gladys Knight and Ali Campbell. On a smaller, more neighborhood scale, Northern Lights Lounge has been in New Center since 2004, known for nightly entertainment and a large outdoor patio. It is one of the few spots in the area for live music, regularly hosting local bands across genres from jazz and blues to electronic and punk. Before a pandemic closure it was also a regular stage for Detroit guitarist Dennis Coffey. The Lincoln Factory is listed as a venue in New Center, but no independently verifiable information about its programming or character was found.
