Home Acres

Home Acres sits along S. Division Avenue on Grand Rapids' south side, in what venue listings call the Home Acres Art District. Two small, owner-operated rooms define the local live-music character here, and both lean toward intimacy over volume. The Philmore South, at 4318 Division Ave S, is a privately operated stage and recording studio on historic Division Avenue. Re-envisioned in fall 2022 as a Grateful Dead-inspired space dedicated to bassist Phil Lesh, it draws on mid-century decor, beat-era inspiration, and speakeasy intimacy. The space has also served as a film studio, rehearsal room, and late-night venue. It books bluegrass and acoustic performances alongside its broader live-music calendar. A few doors up the street, The Stray at 4253 S. Division Ave. describes its concert experience as falling somewhere between a listening room and a house show, in a 99-capacity space. It hosts live music every Friday and Saturday night, with shows usually free but occasionally ticketed. The Stray aims to provide stage time for talented but newer acts, which can be especially useful for younger musicians who otherwise rely on bars and clubs. Guests take in live music alongside artisan foods, espresso, and pastries, with a rotating display of local visual artists on the walls.
