East Hills

Wealthy Street runs through East Hills as a commercial corridor and is home to both of the neighborhood's music venues, placing them within easy walking distance of each other. Speciation Cellars is a family-owned brewery and winery operating out of a 100-year-old garage tucked in an alley off Wealthy Street. Free live music runs every Friday night, featuring mostly local bands hand-selected by the taproom. Sundays bring Tommy Pancy's Jazz Jam, a weekly session hosted by a Grand Rapids saxophonist and MSU jazz alum, rooted in jazz standards and open to all skill levels. Genre range across Friday bookings has included indie rock, bluegrass, Americana, and DJ sets. Wealthy Theatre, a 400-seat concert-ready community theatre at 1130 Wealthy Street SE, is operated by the Grand Rapids Community Media Center, a non-profit. It was originally constructed in 1911 for vaudeville and live theater and reopened as an independent non-profit community arts center after a successful neighborhood restoration campaign in the 1990s. The theatre is capable of hosting live music, film, theatre, and dance. It books a wide range of genres, with recent and upcoming acts spanning classical tribute concerts and rock drummers like Stewart Copeland.
