East Grand Rapids
East Grand Rapids is a small, mostly residential city bordering Grand Rapids, and its live-music footprint is limited. The one consistent venue is Carolina Lowcountry Kitchen, right in the center of Gaslight Village. It is a locally owned spot opened in 2017, built around authentic Lowcountry fare. The John Shea Trio plays jazz every Monday in the front window, a tradition carried over from the trio's longstanding weekly gig at the now-closed Rockwell Republic. Monday nights pair the live jazz with happy-hour specials and fresh-shucked oysters. The restaurant's acoustics suit the format well, and the weekly set draws people in early in the week. For a broader live-music night out, most East Grand Rapids residents turn to the larger venues across the city line in Grand Rapids proper.
