South Division

South Division Avenue runs through the Heartside and Burton Heights neighborhoods, a corridor that has grown into a cultural hub with vintage stores and art galleries. The area's population is highly diverse compared to the rest of Grand Rapids, roughly 43 percent Hispanic and 34 percent Black. That character shapes both of its live-music spots. The Four Star Theatre, once a movie house and nightclub, now hosts storytelling, music, and grassroots events year-round. Opened as a 925-seat, single-screen theater in 1939, it served the neighborhood for nearly 60 years, first as a cinema, then as a music venue, and finally as a nightclub. In its music-venue era it operated as the Great Northern Music Hall, bringing through artists like Joan Jett, Eddie Money, and Flock of Seagulls. Today it is operated by the nonprofit Friends of Four Star Inc., working to build it into a multi-use community arts venue. Down the street, Potter's Log Cabin Bar has been a family-owned fixture since 1938. It runs live music on weekends, karaoke on Mondays and Wednesdays, and EDM nights on Sundays and Tuesdays.
