Saugatuck
Saugatuck's music history runs deep: Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and Dizzy Gillespie played the town's jazz festival in the late 1950s, and the Saugatuck Pop Fest later brought Bob Seger and Muddy Waters. That history carries into a present-day scene that leans heavily on the summer calendar. The Saugatuck Center for the Arts anchors the formal end of things, presenting live music, theater, and film in a 430-seat theater. Its concert programming spans folk, jazz, and contemporary styles, with tribute bands and touring musicians filling the calendar as well. The SCA also has an outdoor plaza stage for warmer-weather shows. The Saugatuck Woman's Club hosts the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck, which has run since 1988 and presents six weeks of traditional and contemporary chamber music by local and national professional musicians at the historic 125-seat downtown venue. Concerts run Thursday and Friday evenings in July and August, each followed by a meet-the-artists reception. The Sand Bar Saloon is a no-frills dive bar that has been a Saugatuck fixture for over 30 years, earning a reputation as the "friendliest bar in Saugatuck" with regular live music. It draws locals for late-night music on Saturdays, usually running past midnight.
