18th & Vine

The 18th & Vine Jazz District is internationally recognized as a historical point of origin of jazz music, a designation it earned during the 1920s and 1930s. Kansas City jazz is a riff-based, blues-influenced sound developed through jam sessions in the neighborhood's crowded clubs. That tradition is still very much alive across the district's venues. The Mutual Musicians Foundation is the oldest continually operating jazz club in the country. It hosts late-night jam sessions every Friday and Saturday from 1:30 to 5 a.m., open to musicians who want to sit in. The Blue Room, the American Jazz Museum's working jazz club, puts on live performances every Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Named after a 1930s hotel lounge, it offers an intimate setting for local and national jazz talent. The Gem Theater is a restored 1912 movie palace now operating as a modern 500-seat performing arts center hosting live music and community events. The district's Jammin' at The Gem series is one of the area's signature recurring music programs. The Kansas City Juke House rounds out the block with live music alongside southern-style bar food. Vine Street Brewing Co. also books live music. Together these venues make 18th & Vine one of the most concentrated and historically grounded live-music corridors in the Kansas City area.
