Prairie Village

Prairie Village is a quiet residential city on the Kansas City metro's Kansas side, with no dedicated commercial music clubs to speak of. Its one notable live-music venue, Village Presbyterian Church (6641 Mission Road), carries real weight in the broader KC arts community. Village Pres has one of the most outstanding music programs in the city, with a world-class organ and top-notch choir, and it presents concerts, most of them free, while hosting some of Kansas City's finest arts organizations, including the Kansas City Chorale and Bach Aria Soloists. The church is home to the Kansas City Wind Symphony, conducted by Langston Hemenway, which has multiple concerts on its annual schedule. The music ministry spans four adult choirs, youth and children choirs, chamber music, and instrumental solos, and second-Thursday midday recitals are a regular feature, as are performances on Opus 22, the church's pipe organ dedicated in 2017. A typical season pulls in visiting ensembles like the St. Olaf College Choir alongside local groups such as the Youth Chorus of Kansas City and the Bach Aria Soloists. Beyond the church, the annual Prairie Village Jazz Festival at Harmon Park draws crowds for a free evening of live music each year.
