A suburb in the Madison area
Stoughton, a town of about 13,000 people roughly 15 miles south of Madison, carries a strong Norwegian heritage and a live-music identity anchored by one of the region's most distinctive venues. The Stoughton Opera House, a 475-seat theater that opened in 1901 and was restored after decades of dormancy, books touring acts from roots and Americana to tribute acts drawing on Madison's wider music scene. Across town, the Old Firehouse Lounge leans into a 1920s Jazz Age identity, hosting live jazz and blues in a historic Main Street building. Acts on its calendar include acoustic groups performing jazz standards and soul music. Out on the water, Springers of Lake Kegonsa puts its stage on a bar and dining room right on the lake, near Lake Kegonsa State Park, with dockside service alongside its live music. The property dates to the early 1900s as a lakeside general store, with a bar added in the 1960s. Together the three venues give Stoughton a range that runs from a restored concert hall to a patio bar on the lake.
