A neighborhood in Milwaukee
Harambee takes its name from the Swahili word for "pulling together" and has long been a Milwaukee stronghold of African American culture. Its live-music footprint is modest, anchored by a single dedicated venue and a public outdoor series. Clinton & Bernice Rose Park hosts a summer concert series that highlights musicians from various cultures and genres. The neighborhood's main indoor room is Savoy's Nite Club. Named after the famous Harlem dance hall, Savoy's harkens back to the Bronzeville clubs of the 1930s, with a parquet floor where a typically mature crowd can step dance to jazz or old-school hip hop. The club sits at 2901 Dr. William Finlayson Street and runs Thursday and weekend nights. Owner Prentice McKinney is a civil rights activist who got his start during the fair housing marches of the mid-1960s, and it's not uncommon to see local politicians and activists at Savoy's. Savoy's is described as one of Milwaukee's oldest established nightclubs of its kind, making it a piece of living neighborhood history as much as a music venue.
