A neighborhood in Milwaukee
Bronzeville, on Milwaukee's Near North Side, was historically the center of the city's jazz scene. Venues like the Metropole, the Moon Glow, and The Flame provided jazz and entertainment most nights of the week. Residents recall performances by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Nat "King" Cole at those clubs. Much of the historic neighborhood was destroyed in the 1960s through urban renewal and the construction of Interstate 43. Today the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District is a City of Milwaukee redevelopment initiative aimed at reviving that jazz and arts legacy. The neighborhood's main live-music anchor now is Bronzeville Kitchen & Lounge at 2053 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., where owner Paul Whigham has made live music, with an emphasis on jazz, a core part of the concept. The venue hosts live music on Thursdays and Fridays, with a Sunday brunch that also features live music. Special programming includes Gospel Sundays and karaoke nights. Whigham has described the goal as giving neighbors a place to enjoy good food and live music without going downtown.
