New Kensington's live-music identity is largely anchored by one operation: Preserving Underground, an independent concert venue in Downtown New Kensington, located within the New Ken Social building complex and directly beneath Preserving Record Shop. The complex houses several venues under one roof: a main stage in a former 19th-century chapel and two smaller rooms on the ground floor, operating as Preserving Underground (300 capacity) and the DIY Room (75 capacity). The venue consistently draws fans of rock, metal, and alternative genres. Recent bookings have included Six Feet Under, EyeHateGod, Crown Magnetar, and Sincere Engineer, reflecting a calendar that spans extreme metal to punk and emo. The venue describes itself as "totally independent, dedicated to preserving the spirit of true DIY concerts." All ages. Always. Located in the heart of Downtown New Kensington, the venue is about a 20-minute drive up Route 28 from Downtown Pittsburgh.
