Lowertown
A neighborhood in St. Paul
Lowertown books music ranging from classical to jazz, rock, folk, and experimental, and hosts large annual events including the Twin Cities Jazz Festival and Lowertown Blues & Funk Festival. Much of that outdoor energy flows through Mears Park, at the heart of the Lowertown district, where a covered band shell anchors concerts, events, and festivals throughout the year. The park's biggest recurring series, Lowertown Sounds, is a free, independent community concert running nearly every Thursday of the summer. Shows run from roughly 6 to 10 p.m., covering genres from rock and bluegrass to hip-hop and salsa. The city also programs free lunchtime concerts at Mears Park on most summer Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For indoor shows, MetroNOME Brewery was founded on a belief in music education and hosts a collection of weekly live performances from local musicians spanning a variety of genres. Gambit Brewing Co. occupies the historic Pioneer Endicott building and brings in local performers for free shows, while its resident DJs run a recurring Vinyl Night, spinning jazz, blues, rock, and funk.
