Stillwater sits along the St. Croix River about 20 miles east of St. Paul, and its walkable downtown supports a steady bar-and-live-music circuit centered on Main Street and the blocks just off it. Mad Capper Saloon & Eatery occupies a spot on Main Street in a historic building adorned with vintage decor. Live music is played by musicians in the evening, and on Saturdays in summer, guests can enjoy live piano or grab the mic for a sing-along. The Velveteen Speakeasy offers a different kind of night. Stillwater's only speakeasy, it is found underground via a secret door at JX Venue. Inside, art deco lines and current mixology collide. Regularly scheduled live music is part of the program, and live jazz played by talented musicians has been a recurring feature. The venue is open Thursday through Sunday.
