East Atlanta Village
East Atlanta Village is one of Atlanta's top neighborhoods for live music, with venues running shows nearly every night. Both anchor venues sit on Flat Shoals Avenue and share a punk and indie-leaning identity, but each has its own character. The EARL, an alternative music venue that opened in July 1999, has a capacity of 300 people, giving an intimate feel to every live performance. It covers everything from local acts to touring national bands, with a focus on indie, punk, and rock. The venue has nurtured local talents like The Black Lips and Mastodon. 529 started as the sister venue of The EARL and became a central point for the DIY scene in EAV. It is a 250-cap, 18-plus independent venue. The venue books metal, hip-hop, indie, and punk/hardcore acts nearly every night, plus novelty events like Punk Rock Karaoke and Emo Night, and has won Creative Loafing's "Best Musicians Hangout" and "Best Place to Hear Local Music."
