Uptown Normal
Anchored by Illinois State University, Normal has a steady arts presence that concentrates in Uptown, where most of its live music happens outdoors or in historic indoor spaces. The Normal Theater is a restored 1937 Art Moderne cinema that serves as a gathering space for live performances and community events alongside its film schedule. The theater hosts concerts, comedy shows, and lectures as a multi-faceted cultural destination in Uptown Normal. The Uptown Circle roundabout functions as the neighborhood's main outdoor stage. Normal LIVE, part of the Town of Normal Cultural Arts Department, produces a series of evening concerts there from late spring into early fall, all free and open to the public. Recent bookings have ranged from the Reginald Lewis Quartet to Kevin Hart & the Vibe Tribe. The district also hosts Make Music Normal, a free two-day festival that fills the streets with live performances, multiple simultaneous stages, open mics, and jam sessions every summer.
