Illinois State University
The Illinois State University neighborhood anchors much of Normal's live-music calendar. Bloomington-Normal has long drawn touring musicians, due in part to the town's position at the intersection of three interstates, placing it squarely in the path of cross-country tours. Braden Auditorium, originally named Union Auditorium when it opened in 1973, has hosted over 300 concerts during its run as ISU's 3,500-seat theatrical venue. Past performers have included Sheryl Crow, B.B. King, Noah Kahan, and Yung Gravy. The hall also hosts Broadway shows, touring companies, and ballets. The Center for the Performing Arts hosts the Illinois Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks and Pops concerts through a partnership with ISU's Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts and School of Music. The CPA serves as home for all College of Fine Arts ticketed events, spanning its Concert Hall and Theatre. Kemp Recital Hall, at 401 S. School Street, hosts faculty recitals and chamber performances, including visiting ensembles such as the award-winning Duo MemDi. Broadview Mansion, a historic Edwardian estate at 1301 S. Fell Ave., hosts an annual outdoor summer concert on its lawn, featuring ensembles such as the Brass Band of Central Illinois. The mansion grounds have also welcomed performances by Illinois Wesleyan University's Illinois Chamber Music Festival, free and open to the public.
