Downtown Bloomington

Downtown Bloomington, IL holds one of Central Illinois's more concentrated live-music footprints, anchored by three distinct venues that cover opposite ends of the spectrum. The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) sits at the center of the city's Cultural District and seats 1,200 in its auditorium. A renovated historic building with updated lighting and sound, it hosts nationally touring artists and is home to more than 20 area performing arts ensembles. The BCPA has served the region for over 100 years. The Castle Theatre opened in 1916 and, following a $1.5 million renovation, operates as a flexible room for 300 to 700 people. It books local and national artists across rock, alternative, Americana, blues, and jazz. Jazz UpFront, opened in 2015 by Bloomington native and musician James Gaston, runs as a 21+ club. It programs jazz, blues, funk, reggae, swing, and Americana. Shows run Friday and Saturday nights, with an open stage on Wednesdays. At 140 capacity, it fills a gap as one of the area's few dedicated jazz rooms. Six Strings Club also appears among the area's regularly cited live-music spots.
