Bridgeport

A neighborhood in Chicago

Bridgeport's nightlife has long been laid-back and bar-focused, with clubs rare and the scene leaning local. Two venues now anchor what live music there is, at strikingly different scales. Maria's Packaged Goods & Community Bar offers a wide selection of craft beers and cocktails, including its own Marz Community Brewing label, in a warm space decorated with vintage beer cans. It is known for nightly music shows. Programming runs to vinyl nights and live DJs, along with open mics and karaoke nights, all historically free of cover. The Ramova Theatre operates at a completely different scale. Built in 1929 as a sister theater to the Music Box Theatre, its interior was designed in the "atmospheric" style, with an auditorium meant to resemble Spanish courtyards and stars on deep blue ceilings. It closed in 1985 and sat vacant for nearly 40 years. It reopened at the end of 2023 as a 1,500-capacity music venue, with the Other Half Ramova brewery on-site. Within its footprint sits the Ramova Loft, a 300-person room hosting local and touring bands, community events, and private rentals. The two stages together book heavy metal tours, techno raves, blues jams, and indie concerts. The theatre earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021 and became a City of Chicago Landmark in 2024.
