Near South Side
A neighborhood in Chicago
The Near South Side is home to Soldier Field and a cluster of large-format venues that make this one of Chicago's primary destinations for major touring acts rather than a small-club scene. The Arie Crown Theater, on Lake Shore Drive, opened in 1960 with seating for 5,000, one of the largest capacities in Chicago. It sits within the McCormick Place convention facility. Over more than five decades it has presented classical, R&B, and rock music alongside musicals and plays. Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island is an outdoor amphitheater whose summer concert season runs from May or June through September or October. Known as the "Venue with a View," it offers sightlines of Lake Michigan, Burnham Harbor, Soldier Field, and the Chicago skyline. It holds over 30,000 people. Radius Chicago is an indoor music venue in the neighborhood booking rock, electronic, and hip-hop shows. Wintrust Arena hosts arena-scale concerts and events alongside its sports programming. Together, these five venues give the Near South Side a live-music identity built around large crowds and major national and international touring acts.
