A neighborhood in Chicago
The Loop is Chicago's densest concentration of formal performance venues, running the full spectrum from marquee theaters to free outdoor concerts in the park. The Auditorium Theatre is a National Historic Landmark known internationally for its acoustics and Sullivan-Adler architecture, and has hosted musical icons including Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Frank Sinatra. It programs classical music, opera, contemporary concerts, dance, and comedy. The Cadillac Palace Theatre is part of the Broadway In Chicago circuit, bringing touring musicals and plays downtown. Symphony Center is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, acclaimed as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. The Chicago Theatre, open since 1921, is a mainstay for live entertainment in the heart of downtown. Jay Pritzker Pavilion is one of the premier outdoor amphitheaters in Chicago, situated in Millennium Park in the Loop, with a Frank Gehry design and a capacity of 11,000. The Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus performs free classical concerts there each summer as part of the Grant Park Music Festival, the nation's only free outdoor classical music series. The Millennium Park Summer Music Series adds free outdoor concerts covering a wide range of established and emerging artists. The Harris Theater for Music and Dance shares backstage facilities with the Pavilion and anchors indoor programming in Millennium Park. The older Petrillo Music Shell remains in Grant Park as an additional outdoor stage.
