Detroit Shoreway sits about two miles west of downtown Cleveland and is home to the Gordon Square Arts District, which draws a steady arts crowd to Detroit Avenue. For live music, the neighborhood runs on two distinct venues. Happy Dog, at 5801 Detroit Ave., is a neighborhood corner bar largely unchanged from the time the Socotch family built it in the late 1940s. The emphasis is on local indie-style bands, mixed with out-of-town acts, but the calendar ranges wide: rock, country, punk, and polka all appear on a given week. Live music runs a couple nights a week, with the crowd ranging from unknown indie acts to members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Soberay365, inside Rock and Roll City Studios on Walworth Ave., is an intimate, state-of-the-art performance venue. Thursdays and Fridays bring open-mic sessions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by booked performances from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attendance and performance are free, with the space also available to rent for private concerts or album release parties.
