Sherman Hill
Sherman Hill is Des Moines' oldest residential neighborhood and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Its single dedicated music venue carries much of the neighborhood's cultural weight. Hoyt Sherman Place, at 1507 Woodland Ave., has anchored the neighborhood since Hoyt Sherman completed his family home in 1877. The theater space itself was built in 1923 to serve the Des Moines Women's Club, opening with 1,400 seats. After a major renovation, it reopened in 2003 as one of the premier live entertainment venues in Des Moines. The venue pairs an intimate theater with extraordinary acoustics alongside a historic mansion and an art gallery. It seats 1,252 and hosts performances, art classes, and guided tours. The booking range is wide, with past acts including St. Paul and The Broken Bones and The Mavericks, as well as Melissa Etheridge, Vince Gill, and the Des Moines Metro Opera. For Sherman Hill residents, Hoyt Sherman Place is essentially the neighborhood's entire live-music footprint, but it punches well above its size.
