Irvington

Irvington, named after Washington Irving, is one of Indianapolis's east-side historic neighborhoods, and its live-music character runs from grand outdoor concerts to small, low-key indoor stages. The Irving Theater, an all-ages music venue inside one of the city's oldest theaters, was built in 1913 as a nickelodeon and reopened as a concert venue in 2006 after years of vacancy. Its calendar runs from indie rock and Americana to alt-comedy and album-release parties, with a mix of all-ages and 21+ nights depending on the show. The Irving also runs a weekly acoustic open mic on Mondays and a poetry open mic on Thursdays, both free. Ellenberger Park, established in 1909, sits in the heart of historical Irvington and serves as the neighborhood's outdoor concert ground. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra brings free concerts there as part of its summer "Symphony in the Parks" series, and Indy Parks runs a free Tuesday evening concert series at the park through the summer. Irvington is also anchored by the annual Irvington Folk Festival, which draws additional live music to the neighborhood each year.
