Downtown
Downtown Knoxville's Gay Street corridor anchors the city's live-music calendar through a pair of historic theaters that share a block. The Bijou Theatre, built in 1909, is Tennessee's oldest secular auditorium and with a capacity of just over 700, many performers and music fans consider it the best-sounding room in Knoxville. Its calendar runs wide, mixing Americana, folk, blues, jazz, and rock, with recent bookings including Son Volt, The Mavericks, Rising Appalachia, and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's chamber series. Next door, the Bistro at the Bijou offers live jazz every Monday, Friday, and Saturday night, featuring prominent and up-and-coming Knoxville jazz musicians with a $5 cover after 8 p.m. on weekends. The Knoxville Civic Auditorium-Coliseum is a multi-venue performance facility in downtown Knoxville that handles larger touring acts; performances hosted there have included symphony orchestra concerts, popular music concerts, and musicals. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performs at both the Civic Auditorium and the Bijou.
