Fort Sanders
The Laurel Theater, a 19th-century church converted into a concert hall, sits in the Fort Sanders neighborhood and is Fort Sanders' dedicated live-music anchor. Owned and operated by Jubilee Community Arts, it presents concerts spanning regional traditional arts as well as local artists and touring acts from traditions outside the region. The room holds around 220 people, and the small size makes it a sweet spot to hear roots music where most everyone gets a good seat. Programming leans toward folk, old-time, bluegrass, and acoustic roots, with past bookings including Irish music sessions and Venezuelan-Appalachian fusion. Its "Live at Laurel" concert series, produced in partnership with WUOT and Jubilee Community Arts, airs Sunday evenings on the radio, focusing on mountain music from performers of all ages. The theater also hosts regular contra and swing dance nights alongside its concert calendar.
