A neighborhood in Louisville
Russell sits immediately west of downtown Louisville and carries the nickname "Louisville's Harlem." Muhammad Ali Boulevard, the old Walnut Street, once drew big-name entertainers to spots including Joe's Palm Room, the center of a stretch between 6th and 13th Streets where theaters, restaurants, and nightclubs thrived. Two venues carry that tradition forward today. The Palm Room, at 1821 West Jefferson Street, is a lounge featuring food and live blues, soul, and R&B, reopened at the site of Joe's Palm Room, which first opened in 1954 as a jazz club and survived racial segregation and urban renewal. PORTAL + ARTPORTAL, inside the fifteenTWELVE Creative Compound, pairs a live music venue with an art gallery, artist studios, boutique retail, and a pop-up coffee shop. The main room holds 400 standing, and its calendar runs toward indie rock, metal, punk, and touring acts alongside community events. Together, the two venues cover a wide range, from soul lounge nights rooted in the neighborhood's history to all-ages rock and art shows on the compound.
